Wondering why there are people using Happy Deepavali or Happy Diwali? Happy Deepavali and Happy Diwali are actually the same! Meaning: Festival of Lights. Today is an official holiday for Malaysia and Singapore, yeah~ Today is also the biggest and most important festival of the year for Hindus all around the world, especially India! Around 80% of 1.2Billion people in India are Hindu, and they will see a green “McD” restaurant in India next Deepavali.

Malaysia, a place that is full of kuih. Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Baba-Nyonya, all races have their own traditional kuih recipes. Fortunately, at, we gather all of these traditional, well-known, homemade delicious kuih recipes for you. So, you don’t have to travel so far here, but you can spread around the delicious recipe you like.

We will publish the recipes all the time, especially on festival season.

For example, a few months ago, my mom’s vegan friends in England, Ireland, and United States, asking her regarding “how to make Vegan Mooncake”. Because, we are really hard to find Vegan Mooncake on the market, why don’t we DIY! So, after a few days of “lab-test”, the final product is ready to show to veganlogy’s friends. Seriously, it is so delicious and attractive.

Indian Spicy and Crispy Golden Veg Kuih Vadei

Vadei? Vadai? Wadei? They are actually same. No big deal. Kuih Dhal is its nickname. It is just because it is made of kacang dhal, which is actually Split-peas. Again, Dhal? Dal? Dahl? are same. It is just the matter of pronunciation in Tamil.

For me, it is an Indian version of Hash Brown! or Spicy Hash Brown! Believe me, you must try to make it.

This ingredient is probably the most popular ingredient in Indian’s vegetarian menu, especially in big occasion. Split-peas are high in protein and fiber, low in fat and calories. This recipe is from my Indian neighbour.

How to make Vadei (Indian Hash Brown)


2 cups of Yellow Split-peas (soaked overnight)
2 red chillies(sliced thinly)
1 large red onion (finely chopped)
Salt (to taste)
3 tablespoons o wheat flour
1-2 stalk of curry leaves (add more if you love spicy)
1 teaspoon of fennel seeds
2 tablespoons of coriander and mint each (finelly chopped)
1. First grind chillies and fennel coarsely.
2. Grind the split-peas into a coarse paste (70-80%, which still can see some peas) with chillies, fennel, and salt.
3. Mix the paste with finely chopped onion, coriander and mint, salt, flour and curry leaves.
4. Wet your hand, and shape your Vadei (palm size, as shown in picture below).
5. Deep fry in hot oil until golden colour. (always cook in medium heat to ensure the golden colour)
