Abu Dhabi Based Photographer Raise Awareness For Bone Marrow Donors
Dubai, a city-state in the United Arab Emirates with the world’s tallest building and seven stars hotel building on it, because of these massive architecture and design, my brother (ChengYang) and I decided to stop by this country and incidentally participated in “The Untitled Chair Project” with Sean Blake & the Red Chair.
While preparing for our first visit, i was searching for useful information and things to do in Dubai on the web, something attracted me. An article in TimeOutDubai about The Untitled Chair Project really attracted my eyeballs. It’s a project to raise awareness about the dire need for bone marrow donors. My friends and I decided to take part in this project and I emailed Sean Blake, the photographer, and he agreed to let us join in no time. So, we arranged the meet up on 11 March for photo shooting session in Dubai.
On the first day 10 March at Dubai, we visited Burj Al Arab, The Palm Jumeirah, Atlantis The Palm and Burj Khalifa as a tourist. The next day early morning, we finally get to meet Sean and the Red Chair in person. He’s very kindhearted and friendly person, he drove about 2 hours car distance from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and pick us up in the hotel at 10am sharp. He arrived punctually. After a small discussion, we decided to move around in town area as all of us were not familiar with Dubai. We stop by the private beach at Jumeirah after a half an hour tour, we found out that beach is a better place for us to start shooting.
The main element for this project. It is a chair painted in red colour.
With the chair and model ready, it’s time to start our photo shooting session. Cheng Yang started his first time modelling session by not looking toward the camera.
Most of my life is to shoot photo in Digital format, i can keep shooting until i get the result that i wanted. However, polaroid is way different, every shutter you click, it come out almost instantly. Every photos you make from the polaroid camera are masterpiece because you cannot edit and it’s final. Luckily i was the one who being a model not a cameraman this time. I get to know about what Polaroid is for the first time.
After 10 shots at the beach, we move toward the next destination. With the photographer’s eyes, Sean spotted the square bush which will make the photo look great in the symmetrical way.
While they’re busy taking photos, i get to have a chance to hold the Burj Al Arab with my fingers.
After we messing around with the little bush, we move to another location near our hotel to finish the photo session in the afternoon. We moved to a rocky seaside place, another great place for photography, as far as the eye can see, it’s endless.
We all had a great day with Sean and managed to get all 40 pieces polaroids done.
In the end, everybody that participated in the photo shooting session get to sign their ‘Big Name’ on the chair, anyway, anyhow and anysize. Music Symbols that presented on the chair was the place where put our signature . Signing the chair represents a commitment to sharing the project and informing others of the need for bone marrow donors.
Finally, everyone of us ge to choose our best shot out of 10 polaroids and take it back home. The remaining 9 images will stay with the project.
