McDonald’s Plans To Open Veg-only Outlet
WHERE? First, Amritsar, India. Second, Katra.
In 1996, when McDonald’s entered India for the first time, it did the unthinkable, because its trademark is beef burgers! While, for Hindu, beef burgers are made from their “Holy Cow”!
Next year, McDonald’s is going to open their first ever pure vegetarian restaurant in the world, near the Golden Temple in the Sikh holy city of Amritsar in Northern India. It is considered as the Sikh religions holiest site!
After the opening in Amritsar, they are going to open another vegetarian only restaurant at the foothills of the Vaishno Devi shrine at Katra in Jammu and Kashmir.
Actually, at McDonald’s India, 50% of the menu is already vegetarian or meatless.
WHY? Localize. Internationalization. Cultural Difference.
As McDonald’s faces rising competition, and its competitors already localized or offered vegetarian options, it is time to change.
Yes, there is a rising trend of vegan and vegetarian, and of course McDonald’s has noticed this trend. Vege does not mean plant-based or organic or anything else, just MEATLESS.
From the viewpoint of business, there is a huge opportunity for vegetarian restaurants especially in India. Among 1.2 Billion people in India, most of them (more than 80%) are Sikh and Hindu, and most of them are strictly vegetarian!
What a exciting number!
And the number is growing…
Second, these are golden locations in India, attract hundreds of thousands of worshippers every year! According to survey, there are more than 10 million of devotees pay their respect here! Can you imagine the crowdedness especially during big festival like Deepavali?
Choosing between Apple (Veg. approach) and Rabbit (Non-Veg. Approach)? McDonald’s choose both.
In 1955, Ray Kroc founded the McDonald’s Corporation and opened the first restaurant in Des Plaines, Illinois.
Ray Kroc was the exclusive distributor of a milk shake maker called the Multimixer. Meanwhile, two brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald owned and ran a hamburger restaurant in San Bernadino, California, in the 1950s. Ray Kroc heard how well the McDonald brothers were doing using his Multimixers to serve their customers. He met up with them and acquired the franchising right from them to run McDonald’s restaurants.
And the rest, of course, is just history.
Today, McDonald’s is the world’s second largest chain of restaurant organisation, with over 33,000 restaurants in 119 countries, serving more than 50 million customers daily! Who is the largest? Answer: Subway (already has veg option!).
